LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN: Escazú Agreement comes into force
In November, the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, better known as the Escazú Agreement, passed the threshold to enter into force after Mexico became the 11th state to ratify it. The Agreement was adopted in 2018 after extensive civil society involvement in its development, with civil society helping to make the Agreement an ambitious and far-reaching one.
Owing to concerted civil society advocacy, Escazú is the first international treaty that includes specific protections for environmental defenders.
