MALI: Hopes for a swift end to military rule

Mali’s military coup offered a warning sign that even flawed and formal democracy is not something that can be taken for granted. Civil society, within Mali and throughout the region, knows that military intervention is never compatible with respect for human rights, and will be calling for the transitional government to make way for free and fair elections as soon as possible, and for key continental and West African institutions to keep up the pressure.
