PERU: Congress fails to ratify Escazú Agreement

Peruvian civil society expected that their country would be the one to ratify and trigger the Escazú Agreement’s entry into force. But on 20 October, the Peruvian Congress’s Foreign Affairs Commission rejected the ratification bill, killing it before it could even proceed to a full debate. While environmental CSOs energetically campaigned for ratification, powerful economic interests actively voiced their opposition.
