RWANDA: African Commission rules in favour of journalists
In July, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights found in favour of two Rwandan journalists, Agnès Uwimana and Saidati Mukakibib, who had received lengthy jail sentences after having been found guilty of defaming President Paul Kagame; the government of Rwanda, which tightly polices dissent and arrested multiple journalists during the pandemic, was asked to revise its defamation laws, which make criticism of the president a risky undertaking.
