UN: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons comes into force

After Honduras became the 50th government to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in October, the Treaty entered into force from January 2021, marking a key step forward in the eventual goal of ridding the world of nuclear arms by advancing an international norm of the unacceptability of nuclear arms. The Treaty originated from the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a global civil society campaign, whose pioneering work on this front was recognised with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

All governments agree – at least nominally – that a world without nuclear weapons is a desirable goal. It’s time to hold them to their words and force them to pursue this goal.
