BELGIUM: Reckoning with colonial legacies

In Belgium protesters called for a reckoning with the country’s colonial past, a subject that had previously rarely entered mainstream debate. In June an estimated 10,000 people came together outside the Palace of Justice in Brussels, many of them wearing masks, in a protest that was tolerated by the city government.
