CHILE: Refusal to ratify Escazú Agreement

Chile, which under its previous government had led the Escazú Agreement’s negotiation process, raised controversy by refusing to ratify it. The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Environment now claimed that the Agreement was unacceptable on the grounds that it contained ‘ambiguous’ obligations that could create legal uncertainty and expose the country to international lawsuits.
