PERU: Outrage sparked by president’s ousting

In a year of many protests in which people called on heads of government to resign, Peru offered a more unusual sight in November, as tens of thousands of people protested against the removal of the country’s president.

The space generated by the mobilisation was populated by a number of heterogeneous demands, ranging from the reinstatement of President Vizcarra to the demand for constitutional change to pave the way out of neoliberalism, including citizen-based proposals focused on the defence of democracy, the continuity of reforms, the injustice of the repression, and the insensitivity of the political class regarding the pandemic health emergency. Ferment for these demands continues to exist.
